Make sure pet bedding is kept away from cold drafty areas of the home.
A humidifier can prevent dry, itchy, flakey skin.
Other Animal Issues:
This time of year wildlife may come closer to your warmer homes. Keep an eye out for any wildlife visitors before letting your pet outdoors.
Be sure to bang on your car hood before you start your engine to give cats and other animals a chance to escape.

For pets and people alike, it is easier to keep weight off than to lose it. An overweight pet with even a few extra pounds can experience consequences for their long-term health and wellness. Weight-loss diets can be difficult to maintain – especially once behavioral patterns are established to overeat, sneak treats, and munch on snacks throughout the day.

Despite warnings of developing associated diseases (such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, cancer) and early mortality, a shockingly high number of pets are considered overweight or obese, mainly seniors. Weight gain occurs when an individual consumes too many calories with insufficient opportunities to burn them off. Many pets live fairly sedentary lives and eat energy-dense food. Lots of naps combined with even a normal amount of food plus regular treats can be more damaging than you think.

An overweight pet simply needs less food and more exercise, right? It’s not always that easy.

The Measuring Cup

Overfeeding is the most obvious reason for added weight, but certain medical conditions like Cushing’s syndrome or hypothyroidism can affect a pet’s metabolism. Before you make changes to your pet’s diet, we recommend ruling out what could be going on beneath the surface.

A wellness exam is helpful in discerning whether your pet is up for rigorous exercise.

Trying to Lose Weight

There could be other explanations behind why an overweight pet isn’t losing weight or isn’t losing it fast enough.

The ideal place to start is with an understanding of the Body Condition Score (BCS). Taking into account your pet’s species, breed, age and lifestyle we can determine their weight and exercise plan, for them to achieve the optimal score on the BCS.

A Greater Challenge

Once you know how much your pet should ideally weigh, you can determine their daily intake of food, snacks, treats, supplements, and people food. Look at the ingredients lists on food labels and call us with any questions.

An overweight pet might benefit from removing about 25-40% of their previous calorie count, but because they depend on critical vitamins and nutrients, cutting calories from their meals isn’t necessarily a healthy alternative. Instead, reduce the amount of extra calories they receive from snacks and treats.

Plan a Pet-Safe Landscape to Prevent Pet Poisoning This Spring

Spring is here! This can be a stressful time for pet owners. Parasite prevention, microchipping, and vaccination might come to mind, but among the threats to pet health and safety are the plants that make spring and summer so delightful.

Undoubtedly, pet poisoning is a common occurrence, but with a fresh look at a pet-safe landscape it doesn’t have to be.

Some plants are risky

Many pets don’t have a taste for greenery or blooms, until they decide to sample something that looks or smells appealing. And while some plants present zero risks to pets, some have side effects that range from mild to severe to deadly. With that in mind, the general rule of thumb is to discourage pets from eating all plants.

A pet-safe landscape

The ASPCA list of toxic and non-toxic plants is an essential guide for pet owners interested in creating pet-safe yards. Some of the most common spring blooms can cause a disastrous pet poisoning situation, including:

Daffodils

Morning glory

Lilies are among the most poisonous plants, especially in cats. Even a little pollen swept up by the nose or tongue can cause damage. Be aware of any added colors or dyes to garden mulch and use caution if considering rubber mulch. Dogs are known to pick up pieces of bark or landscaping mulch and eat it.

Most pet owners are familiar with the unpleasant (or downright foul) stench of doggie or kitty breath, but did you know that bad breath can indicate less-than-stellar dental health for a pet? Studies show that 85% of adult pets have some form of dental disease, and the bacteria found in plaque and tartar can have a negative impact on the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver.

The Daily Brushings

Each brushing session should take place when your pet is relaxed and happy, such as after a walk or meal.
Acclimate your pet to having their mouth checked by dipping a finger into broth or water and inserting it into the mouth, rubbing it gently over the teeth and gums.
Once your pet has adjusted to your finger, introduce the toothbrush by first allowing your pet to sniff and chew on the brush. This gives your pet the chance to understand the toothbrush before any actual brushing takes place.
Once your pet appears comfortable with the toothbrush by itself, add a small segment of pet-safe toothpaste (never use human toothpaste as it contains ingredients that are toxic to pets) and allow your pet to interact with the toothpaste and toothbrush combo.
Add more toothpaste if needed, and rub over all the teeth in a circular motion from front to back.

Ideally, your pet’s teeth should be brushed for a total of 2 minutes, each day. · Once per week, lift your pet’s lips and examine the mouth for signs of dental disease. In a healthy mouth, the gums will be pink and not show signs of swelling or bleeding. Teeth should be clean and free of tartar buildup.

Don’t forget to offer plenty of praise and snuggles afterward!

New Year's Eve marks a wonderful time for us all. It is an explosion of new opportunity and celebration--a true fresh start. However, for your pets it can be a scary time full of stress and anxiety. Fireworks create bright lights and loud noises that dogs, cats and other animals don’t like. And, beyond the stress of the fireworks, if you have any sort of party in your pets’ space, it can also be dangerous. Keeping them in mind while planning for this holiday will make it easier and more comfortable during this potentially hard day for them.

7 Ways to Prepare

Exercise: Before the fireworks begin, exercise your pets. This can help reduce stress and anxiety.
Keep to diet: Pets should continue to eat a normal diet, even with all the tempting holiday treats.
Know your pet: Pets that are scared or disoriented by loud noises should not be taken outside to large fireworks displays. Some pets benefit from medication to help them remain calm during the festivities. Schedule an appointment to discuss this option with us in advance to see if this is a fit for your pet.
Make a safe and secure shelter: Observe your pets ahead of time to know where they tend to go (or try to) when frightened. If possible, give them access to their preferred place while fireworks are going off.

Core vaccines are recommended for every dog and puppy . They are considered vital because they protect your dog from harmful diseases and illnesses that have a high risk of exposure or are highly contagious to other dogs or humans. Keeping up to date on your dog’s core vaccines protects not only them, but your whole family and community.

What vaccines are considered core, and what is the plan of action for your dog if it is not yet vaccinated? Read more to find out. 

The Following Vaccines Are Considered Core:

DAPP: This vaccine prevents canine distemper, adenovirus (hepatitis), parvovirus, and parainfluenza; all deadly viruses or diseases when left untreated.
Rabies: This deadly viral infection of the nervous system causes sudden, progressive inflammation in the brain and spinal cord. Most cases of humans getting rabies is from an infected dog biting them. Rabies is untreatable and is highly contagious to humans.

How Often Does My Dog Need These Core Vaccines?

DAPP : All puppies should receive at least 3 doses between the ages of 8 to 16 weeks, given 3-4 weeks apart. They should also receive a 1 year booster.

If you have an adult dog that has not had its vaccines yet, they require 2 doses at 3-4 week intervals. Annual vaccination is not recommended for adults, so we use a 3 year vaccination interval after the 1 year booster.

Rabies: State statutes dictate rabies vaccine protocols. In Iowa, puppies should receive one dose as early as 4 months, then receive a 1 year booster. After that, they should receive a vaccine every 3 years.

If your dog is unvaccinated, they receive a single dose, a booster at 1 year, and then every 3 years after that. 

If your dog is past due on their 3 year vaccination, a 1 year rabies must be provided.

Surgery can be a necessary part of providing the best life for your pet. We know that having any member of your family in surgery can be scary, which is why we are here for you and wanting to provide additional information to hopefully make it a little easier. This blog outlines what happens when your pet is in surgery.

Preparing for Surgery

The surgical staff will scrub, cap, mask, gown, and glove prior to entering the surgical suite. 
All of the surgical equipment is sterilized. 
The pet’s skin and fur are prepped, which involves removing fur in the area and cleaning it.
An IV (intravenous) catheter is placed prior to surgery. This allows us immediate access to any medications and fluids required to support your pet throughout their surgery. A small portion of your pet’s leg will be shaved and cleaned for catheter placement.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia protocols are tailored to your pet’s individual needs. All precautions are taken to minimize risk for your loved one. Isoflurane gas anesthesia is used, which is an extremely safe anesthetic.

Keeping Your Pet Nice and Warm

While under anesthesia, it is very common for pets to lose body heat. A lowered body temperature can slow recovery times and result in complications. This is why we place all surgical patients on heated circulating water blankets to maintain normal body temperature.

Monitoring

Before, during, and after the surgery your pet will be constantly monitored by a certified veterinary technician who is diligently watching things like:

Core vaccines are crucial in the prevention care that we recommend to every one of our feline friends. How are vaccines considered “core”? It is based on having a high risk of exposure, lots of potential health problems, or being highly contagious.

The Following Vaccines Are Considered Core:

Feline Panleukopenia is a virus that infects and kills important cells growing and dividing, such as those in the bone marrow, intestines, and a developing fetus.

When to vaccinate: All kittens should receive this vaccine as early as 6 weeks and then at 3-4 week intervals until 16 weeks of age. After that, they should receive a 1 year booster.

Non-vaccinated adults, including non-vaccinated pregnant cats, should receive 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart. After that, we vaccinate every 3 years.

Feline Rhinotracheitis is a respiratory disease that causes inflammation of the nose and windpipe or trachea.

When to vaccinate: All kittens should receive this vaccine as early as 6 weeks of age and then in 3-4 week intervals until 16 weeks old. After that, they should receive a 1 year booster.

If you have a cat that is not yet vaccinated, it should receive 2 doses 3 weeks apart. After that, we vaccinate every 3 years.

Feline Calicivirus is a virus can cause upper respiratory infections and oral disease.

When to vaccinate: Every kitten should receive this vaccine as early as 6 weeks of age and then in 3 - 4 week intervals until 16 weeks old. After that, they should receive a 1 year booster.

If your adult pet has not been vaccinated, they should receive 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart. After that, we vaccinate every 3 years.

Rabies is a deadly viral infection of the nervous system, which causes sudden, progressive inflammation in the brain and spinal cord. This is also untreatable and highly contagious in humans.

When to vaccinate: State and local statutes determine how often Rabies vaccines are administered. In Iowa a single dose is required as early as 12 weeks of age. Every kitten should receive a 1 year booster.

If your adult cat has not been vaccinated, they should receive 1 vaccine and a booster 12 months later. After that, vaccines should be given in 3 year intervals. 

Why Does My Cat Need Core Vaccines?

These vaccines are considered core (and therefore recommended for all cats) because they protect your feline family members against the most common or most severe illnesses that we can vaccinate for. It is better to prevent and protect than just to hope something doesn’t happen. Once they become sick, it is too late to vaccinate, making more extreme (and expensive) methods necessary.

Lifestyle or “non-core” vaccines are given depending on your pet’s lifestyle. They are recommended for individuals at risk for exposure to specific infectious agents.

What Are Infectious Agents?

Infectious agents are organisms that are capable of producing infection or infectious disease. They can be transmitted to other animals or people in many different ways, including (but not limited to) contaminated drinking water, direct contact, and bug bites. 

Potential exposure and the need for prevention depend on the lifestyle of you and your pets.

Lifestyle Vaccines For Dogs:

Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) If your pet has been bitten by a tick in the past or is near known tick habitats often (like wooded areas), a Lyme vaccine is recommended because ticks are known to transmit Lyme disease. Lyme disease signs range from fever and joint pain to kidney failure.

When to vaccinate: Puppies should receive 2 doses. The first at 12 weeks and the second 3-4 weeks later. 

If your dog is an adult and has not had their vaccines, they should receive 2 doses at 3-4 week intervals. After that, annual boosters are recommended.

We recommend the Lyme vaccine if you plan on going hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, or are near farm animals or wildlife areas with your dog.

Leptospira: Dogs can get this potentially deadly bacterial infection through puddles or bodies of water that have urine from infected animals in them. The bacteria goes in through the skin and spreads through their bloodstream. Causing liver and kidney failure.

When to vaccinate: Puppies should receive 2 doses between the ages of 12 to 16, administered 3 – 4 weeks apart. All puppies should receive a one-year booster. 

If you have an adult dog that is not yet vaccinated, they should receive 2 doses 3 – 4 weeks apart. After that, annual vaccinations are recommended.

We recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine if you plan on going hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, or are near farm animals or wildlife areas with your dog.

Bordetella (Kennel Cough): Bordetella is the most common bacterial infectious agent to cause kennel cough. Kennel cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory disease that causes inflammation in dogs’ throats and lungs. We recommend this vaccine if the dog will be boarded, groomed or in contact with many dogs

When to vaccinate: Both puppies and unvaccinated adults receive a single dose. Annual boosters are recommended for pets that are high risk.

Lifestyle Vaccines For Cats:

Feline Leukemia: This virus weakens the cat’s immune system, which can lead to illness, disease and a shorter lifespan.

When to vaccinate: Two doses are administered at 12 weeks of age and then 3 - 4 weeks later.

We recommend this vaccine to cats at risk of exposure due to multi-house cat households (especially ones where not all cats are fully vaccination) or if the cat frequently goes outside. The timeline for boostering cats on this vaccine is variable by lifestyle, usually every 1-2 years.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

What Bloodwork Testing Happens at the Vet?

What is a Chemistry Panel?

A CBC, or “complete blood count” is a series of tests on certain blood cells. It can give indication of many health problems, including:

Have you heard the term “heartworm” but don't really know what it is? This post will help you learn the truth about this potentially deadly parasite.

What are the signs that my dog has heartworms?

Symptoms of heartworm in dogs depend on how many heartworms they are hosting, how active your dog is, and if there are pre-existing health issues. A mild to moderate case is usually accompanied by:

chronic cough
decline in appetite
exercise intolerance

In extreme cases, dogs can develop congestive heart failure, or even death.

Dogs are natural hosts for heartworms. This means that the heartworms can produce baby worms when living in the dog’s tissue and organs.

What are the signs that my cat has heartworms?

Signs of your cat having heartworm can vary greatly. Some cats show little to no signs, others show intense indicators. It partially depends on if the worms in your cat are immature or mature worms. Symptoms range from lethargy and breathing problems, to shock and death.

Cats are not natural hosts, so the heartworms cannot reproduce inside of the cat.

How can my pet be infected by heartworms?

Heartworms start with a mosquito.

When a mosquito bites an animal that is already infected with heartworm, the insect picks up baby worms. These baby worms live and grow inside the mosquito for up to two weeks before they mature into the infective larvae stage. Then, when the mosquito bites a different dog or cat, the infective larvae are deposited on the pet’s skin. The larvae then enter the new host through the bite wound to get to their bloodstream. There they travel to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, where they will mature into adult heartworms.

How can I prevent heartworms?

Traditional medication does not prevent the parasites from getting into your pet’s system. It only kills the immature larvae that are less than 30 days old. If the medicine is late (in some cases by as little as one day), the larvae can mature and ongoing treatments will not stop them from growing.

This can be a lot of pressure for a pet parent to get everything right.

Clients often let us know that remembering to give pets their heartworm medicine is a pain and causes unnecessary stress. Teaching your puppy how to go potty correctly is one of the first big things you train your new family member to do. There are many things to think about and do to make the potty training process easier for you and your pup.

When should I begin puppy potty training?

It’s recommended to start house-training when puppies are 12 to 16 weeks old. At that age they have enough control over their bladder and bowel movements to learn how to hold it.

How often should I take my puppy out?

Puppies need to go to the bathroom more frequently than adult dogs. They should be taken out:

when they wake up
before they go to bed
after they eat or drink
at least every 2 hours

What are the signs that my puppy needs to go potty?

Typical signs that your puppy needs to go to the bathroom are:

whining
barking
circling
sniffing

If you notice your dog needs to go potty, take them out right away.

What should I NOT do when I house-train?

Do not punish your puppy for having an accident, it could lead to your puppy fearing you and making the process more difficult. Instead, praise them properly when they do something good.

What are some house-training tips?

Choose a location. When you take your puppy to the same spot every time they go potty, the scent will be a signal for them to do their business. This also makes it super important to thoroughly clean any spot your puppy has an accident in the house, as they tend to pee in the same spot if they can smell it.
Reward good behavior. Once they finish, give them a treat to reinforce good behavior.
Keep it regular. Keeping your puppy on a regular feeding schedule (and removing their water dish about 2.5 hours before bed) will decrease the chances of accidents.

If they continue to go potty at inappropriate places, or more than once every hour, consult your veterinarian to rule out possible medical issues.

There is nothing worse than seeing your pet scratching more than usual – that pang of fear you feel as you wonder, “Oh no...is it fleas?” This blog is to answer the most common questions (and clear up some misconceptions) about fleas and ticks.

What are fleas and ticks?

Flea is a common term for over 2000 different species of small flightless insects that survive as an external parasite of mammals and birds. They live by consuming blood and can transmit diseases to humans and animals. Ticks are arachnids, which means they are related to spiders.

Fleas and ticks are something that can and should be prevented. Prevention allows you to confidently keep you and your loved ones healthy.

Do you let your pet sleep in your bed? Or on the couch? If so, prevention is even more critical because those parasites can quickly spread to your bed, furniture, and carpet. Fleas and ticks do bite humans and can cause very itchy bumps--and they are much harder to get rid of than they are to prevent.

What are signs that my pet has fleas?

Some of the warning signs are:

scabs
hot spots on the skin
excessive licking
scratching
hair loss

Is it really that big of a deal?

Fleas can take up to 15 times their weight in blood. This means the more fleas your loved one has, the bigger risk of developing anemia. Anemia is when there is a dangerous drop of red blood cells. Puppies and kittens are at the most risk because they are so little.

Signs of anemia caused by fleas are pale gums and a lack of energy.

Fleas are also a common cause of skin disease in dogs and cats. The saliva from the flea gets injected into your pet’s skin when they bite, which can also cause an allergic reaction.

What are signs of ticks?

Ticks tend to be bigger than fleas, so they are easier to spot on you or your pet. Ticks typically have multiple hosts throughout their lifetime.

Do not scratch or rip off ticks. Please call us right away if your pets are infected.

It is camping season! We know you’re itching to get out of the house this summer...but let’s make sure your pet (and other family members) don’t end up itching after going on that trip.

How can I prepare for my camping trip?

Check the pet policy. Most places post their pet policy online, but it is best to call the campsite individually to ensure it is up to date and get more information. Each campsite, park, beach, and hiking trail can have different rules and regulations. However, most campgrounds require your pet to be up to date on all their vaccinations , which is why we recommend the next item.
Schedule a veterinary appointment before you go. In addition to making sure your furry family members are healthy enough for the trip, it is also important to get them vaccinations (see step 1), make sure they are up to date with their flea and tick prevention, refill any medications or special food items, and get any updated medical records you may need to have on hand for the campsite.
Create a packing list. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your campsite and realizing you don’t have your pet’s medication, leash, or required documentation to be on site. Make a list well before travel day to ensure you have a relaxing trip with the family. Here are a few key things you don’t want to forget:

How to keep your pet safe during the trip.

Once you start your trip, never leave your pets alone . This includes the car, campsite, and during all activities. Your pet could be perfectly behaved, but other animals and people could act unexpectedly. You also probably have a lot of equipment and supplies in your car, which your pet could get into if you are not there. Additionally, there is always the potential for overheating in a vehicle, which happens much faster than you imagine.

Dehydration is something you need to look out for in all your pet family members. Signs of it vary with different kinds of pets, but a few signs to look out for are weakness, disorientation, agitation, throwing up, and fatigue.

Only bring out food during meals and completely clean up food scraps and dishes.

This goes for pets and humans. Food can attract wild animals, anything from racoons to bears. In general, you do not want to leave a trace.

What should I do before I leave my camping site?

Always take extra care checking the surroundings for anything out of place before leaving. This is in respect to the campsite, the campers staying next, any animals that live in the area, and to preserve nature. Cleaning up after your entire party should be a priority always when outside.
